Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey was the director of college scouting in 2005 when the Green Bay Packers drafted a quarterback in the back half of Round 1, despite having an entrenched starter already at the position. Brett Favre played three more seasons in Green Bay before moving on, turning the job over to Aaron Rodgers.
Alex Smith isn’t Brett Favre and Deshaun Watson will likely never have the career of Aaron Rodgers. But we could see a similar transition at the quarterback position for the Chiefs a year or two down the road. Kansas City is committed to Smith right now because he gives the team the best chance for another playoff push in 2017. However, if Watson is still on the board at pick No. 28, he would secure the future of the position for the franchise and pairing him with head coach Andy Reid is an ideal match.
