Expect Heavy Delays In Preparation Of New 91 Lanes Opening March 20

Mark your calendar as the new 91 lanes through Corona are scheduled to open March 20th.  You’re advised however to expect heavy work to prepare for the opening.

The Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) has planned March 20th as the opening date for the new 91 Express Lanes and general purpose lanes in Corona. The westbound 91 lanes are planned to open by 4 a.m., and expect the eastbound lanes open by 5 a.m.

RCTC said in a release that the construction of their $1.4 billion 91 project extends the 91 Express Lanes. The 91 Express Lanes have been extended eight miles to I-15 in Riverside County. The work added general purpose lanes between the 71 and I-15, and will now provide a tolled express connector between the 91 and I-15. Other work conducted during the project was 32 new built or widened bridges, five interchanges were improved, and they also realigned and repaved local streets.

RCTC Executive Director Anne Mayer said, “RCTC made a promise to open the new lanes in spring 2017, and March 20 is the first day of spring.” “We are proud to deliver on our promise and
equally proud of this major infrastructure investment for Corona and the region.”

Here’s where you may need to prepare for heavy delays, because during the next 10 days, crews are expected to be working night and day to prepare the new lanes for opening. So, expect multiple lane closures and ramp closures on both directions of the 91, with a majority of the work occurring between Thursday, March 16 and Sunday, March 19.

Be advised, at least one hour of delays are expected when traveling through the project limits on March 19, you are encouraged to allow extra travel or to even just avoid the area. You can use the 57 and the 60 as alternate routes or to travel via Metrolink.

Even though the new lanes are scheduled to open on March 20, ongoing construction work will be happening until the fall, and there will be periodic closures required. Get continue information on the project website, sr91projectinfo.com, call or the project helpline, 877–770–9191.
