Jeff Bridges ‘Live’ Tracklist Includes Covers of the Byrds, Townes Van Zandt and – Of Course – Creedence Clearwater Revival
With two albums under his belt, he’s been spending time on the road with his backing band, the Abiders (yes, it’s a reference to The Big Lebowski). And now he’s releasing his first live album, appropriately titled Live.
The album draws from both of his albums – 2000’s Be Here Soon (“She Lay Her Whip Down”) and 2011’s Jeff Bridges (“What a Little Bit of Love Can Do,” “Blue Car” and “Maybe I Missed the Point”), as well as the soundtrack to Crazy Heart, (“Fallin’ and Flyin’,” “I Don’t Know”).
It also features a few covers, including the Byrds’ “So You Want To Be A Rock and Roll Star” and Townes Van Zandt’s “To Live Is To Fly.” But the one cover that will no doubt thrill Bridges’ legion of Lebowski fans: Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Lookin’ Out My Back Door.”
For the uninitiated, one of the many hilarious scenes in The Big Lebowski takes place when Bridges’ character, “The Dude,” drives his car, drinking a beer and smoking what appears to be an illegal substance, while rocking to Creedence Clearwater Revival‘s classic “Lookin’ Out My Back Door.” The Dude notices he’s being followed by a blue VW Beetle, and things get a bit messy from there. But while he’s wondering who is following him (we later learn it’s a “Private Dick” named Da Fino), we’re left to wonder, “Hey, what would it sound like if The Dude covered Creedence?” So now we’ll know.
Live is set for a Sept. 30 release. Bridges and the Abiders are currently on the road and are playing tonight (Aug. 27) at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Check his website for complete tour dates.
